The gist of it is summed up in this quote, "“Pre-rinsing dishes is a big mistake,” said John Dries, a mechanical engineer and the owner of Dries Engineering, an appliance design consulting company in Louisville, Ky. “People assume that the dishwasher will perform better if you put in cleaner dishes, and that’s not true. Just scrape. Pre-rinsing with hot water is double bad, because you’re pumping water and electricity down the drain.”

Your New Mushroom Brush, Inspired by Spaghetti

I recently moved and brought a bare minimum of kitchen gadgets to my new apartment. I’m identifying needs as I go along, buying very little in favor of adaptive reuse. I’ll buy some produce at the store and discover I lack the conventional tool to clean/slice/chop/prepare it, so I improvise.

That’s what happened when I suddenly found myself with mushrooms and nary a mushroom brush in sight. As I thought about other similar tools I had around, I considered the fingernail brush in the bathroom and – ick! – immediately dismissed the prospect. Then I saw the answer hanging before my eyes: my gentle Original Spaghetti Scrub.

Presto! It was brilliant. As with Tupperware, the scrub hugs the curves of the mushroom and wiggles under the cap where it meets the stem. All things considered, a perfectly effective mushroom cleaner!

For other, firmer vegetables, you can clean them with Skrub’a scrubbing gloves, which happen to come in a cute kids pumpkin design, just in time for Halloween.

I’m not the only one who has repurposed these products recently:

How are you celebrating Earth Day? Me, I’m using it as a convenient excuse to get fresh with produce. A bountiful farmers market just thrills me, so I’m really looking forward to the special Earth Day Farmers Market taking place in LA’s Koreatown on Thursday, April 22. It is organized by the good people at Raw Inspiration, operator of some of the most geographically desirable markets in greater LA, including Larchmont Village, Melrose Place, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and the Americana at Brand in Glendale.

The market takes place at Wilshire Center, 3700 Wilshire Blvd., from 11 am-3 pm. Much more than just a great farmers market, the event is a full-scale festival with music, booths, kids activities and more. It’s part of the L.A. citywide car-free campaign on Earth Day, so they encourage you to come by foot, bike, bus or train. E-waste recycling and tree giveaways, too.

Hello Detergent! Goodbye Landfill!

So, even though we advocate the use of less detergent as a step towards a healthier environment, there are some instances when a little detergent is a good thing. Take diapers for example. Most parents in the U.S. use disposable diapers. The Real Diaper Association estimates that 27.4 billion disposable diapers are consumed every year in the U.S. and that over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill. So what did parents do before disposable diapers? Washable, reusable cloth diapers of course. We discovered Andina Diapers at the Natural Products Expo recently and were impressed with the soft, absorbent cotton they use. After wearing they can be thrown in the washing machine instead of the trash. Andina recommends using a non-residue detergent such as Charlie's Soap. This is one use of detergent we endorse!

Going Easy on Detergent

This great article written from 'Ecossentials' Blog highlights the reasons we should all be more conscious of our soap and detergent use.

"I've been writing on some weighty topics lately — too little money, too many choices, too few jobs. It's time, I decided, to move on to some questions that haunt me almost every day.
How much soap should I put in my washing machine and dishwasher?
Do I need to do more for my dryer than clean that little pull–out lint catcher?
Should I rinse my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?
Most of us learned how to use a washing machine or dishwasher in our parents' house many years ago and haven't really changed our methods, even though most appliances have evolved radically since then. We rarely, if ever, read the manuals when we buy a new one or glance through the instructions on the box of detergent or bottle of dishwashing liquid.
But because we're probably using these appliances incorrectly, our dishes and clothes may not be coming out as clean as they could be. And we may also be damaging the machines.
Let me start with soap. The No. 1 sin, according to repair people and appliance experts, seems to be adding too much soap to washing machines or dishwashers.
"Nobody thinks they use too much soap," said Vernon Schmidt, who has been a repairman for almost 35 years and is the author of a self–published book, "Appliance Handbook for Women: Simple Enough Even a Man Can Understand." But apparently most of us are in denial.
Washing machines and dishwashers are made to use far less water now than older models and, therefore, need less soap. And detergents have also become increasingly concentrated. So a little goes a long way.
"Most people use 10 to 15 times the amount of soap they need, and they're pouring money down the drain," Mr. Schmidt said.
Following the instructions on the soap container is a good first step. Christina Saunders, a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble, which makes Tide, Cheer, Gain and other laundry detergents, said researchers at the company did thousands of loads of laundry to determine the right amount of soap needed.
She said the caps were changed on liquid detergent containers a few years ago to make the lines specifying amount of soap needed for different size loads easier to see.
Mr. Schmidt, however, argues that depending on how hard or soft your water is, one–eighth to one–half of what is usually recommended should be adequate.
Too much detergent can make your clothes stiff and shorten the life of your machine. An excess of soap can also cause a buildup of mold and mildew, said Jill Notini, a spokeswoman for the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, a trade group.
With high–efficiency machines — which includes all front–loading machines and any top loader that specifically states that it's high efficiency — it's a good idea to use detergents specifically made for them, she said. The detergents usually have H.E. on the front of the container. But don't expect to see a lot of soap action.
"If people see suds, they think their clothes are getting clean, but that's wrong — it means you're using a lot of extra detergent," Ms. Notini said
Here is Mr. Schmidt's test to determine if you're oversoaping. Take four to six clean bath towels, put them in your front–loading washing machine (one towel for a top loader). Don't add any detergent or fabric softener. Switch to the hot water setting and medium wash and run it for about five minutes.
Check for soap suds. If you don't see any suds right away, turn off the machine and see if there is any soapy residue. If you see suds or residue, it is soap coming out of your clothes from the last wash.
"I've had customers that had to run their towels through as many as eight times to get the soap out," Mr. Schmidt said, who lives in Indiana. He offers other handy advice on his Web site, refrigdoc.com.
Too much soap is also a problem in dishwashers and can cause dishes and glasses to look filmy. Again, check the detergent container for recommended amounts — you definitely don't have to fill up the entire soap container in the dishwasher.
Also, if your plastic items come out still wet, that doesn't mean your dishwasher is not doing its job. Most dishwashers today emit less heat than the older models, so plastic doesn't dry completely.
Loading the dishwasher right will also get your dishes cleaner. When I was growing up, apparently only my mother knew the right way to load. But since my mother can't get to all your houses, Consumer Reports offers these much–needed tips on its Home and Garden blog. (Please don't e–mail me if you disagree about these suggestions — like religion and politics, we all have our own views on this matter.)
Load large items at the sides and back of the dishwasher so that they don't block water and detergent from reaching other dishes.
Place the dirtier side of the dishes toward the center of the machine for more exposure to spray.
Load silverware in the individual silverware slots most dishwashers now include. If you have an open basket, mix forks, spoons and knives to prevent them from sticking together.
Also, remove baked on food and large chunks, but for the most part, everyone I spoke to said prerinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher was not only unnecessary, it wasted thousands of gallons of water and could actually result in dirtier dishes.
"The soap needs something to work against to get the dishes clean," said Lou Manganiello, who owns Household Appliance Service in Hawthorne, N.Y., and has been doing repairs for 23 years. For full disclosure, he has also ably repaired my appliances from time to time.
Now, on to dryers. I don't happen to use those fabric softener sheets, but if you do, practice restraint, Mr. Manganiello said.
On the theory that if one is good, five must be better, people throw in a bunch of the sheets. Those liquefy when the dryer gets hot and can gum up the dyer, becoming "almost like tar and feathers," Mr. Manganiello said.
Also, clean the lint below the removable filter. I bought an item at my local hardware store that looks like a bottle brush, but is longer, denser and has a kind of thin nose. It reaches down and removes lint you can't get to otherwise.
And think about cleaning lint off the dryer where it vents outdoors.
Of course, the best way to extend the life of your dryer is to use it less often by hanging out your laundry on a clothesline when the sun is shining.
One last bit of advice on an appliance — your oven. Use the self–cleaning mode more than once a year — otherwise, so many food particles have built up that when they burn off, smoke will billow throughout your entire kitchen. But don't clean right before a big holiday dinner, Mr. Schmidt advised.
That's because the oven heats so high during cleaning that any weak part will give.
"If it's ever going to fail, it will then," he said. "Every holiday we get swamped with calls."

Here's something great we saw at the Natural Products Expo last week in Anaheim: 3B brand reusable produce bags made from recycled polyester. The ladies that started this company are taking the reusable grocery bag trend to the next level, eliminating the use of disposable plastic produce bags. I've always avoided using those plastic bags in the produce section because it seemed so wasteful, but I also thought it would be nice to have something to separate the onions from the artichokes. And a produce bag is especially handy if you're buying small items like grapes or string beans. The 3B mesh bags are made from recycled polyester. Now, this is a little controversial since some in the eco world object to a material that isn't biodegradable. But the non-biodegradability gives these bags advantages such as drying extremely quickly, not encouraging the growth of mold and mildew and being strong and long-lasting. Plus the 3B bags are extremely lightweight and you can see through them, which you wouldn't be able to do with cotton (except for being see-through, the Goodbye Detergent products share all these advantages with 3B) So, if you use these bags for years you will be preventing tons of plastic bags from entering the environment. Goodbye plastic bags; hello Earth!

Raise your hand if you’re green! OK, I see a virtual roomful of airborne hands. Jolly good.

Undoubtedly, each of you has your personal definition of the green lifestyle. We probably have a lot in common, but we each do some unique things.

I was reflecting on some of the quirky things I do. The more I thought, the more I realized they may be pretty nutty. Or not. So I’m sharing my green lifestyle to elicit comments about yours.

What offbeat things do you do? What have you struggled with recently? Let’s compare notes, shall we?

My personally green life:

If I buy something like packaged sushi for lunch, I’ll put the packaging in my car to recycle at home.

If I see a clean bottle or can on the top of a trash can, I’ll take it home for recycling. (This is the extent of my social recycling; I don’t dig deeper into trash cans and I don’t take anything other than clean bottles and cans.)

I’m a wild thing at the farmers market. My reusable canvas bags hold smaller reusable bags for cherry tomatoes, Persian cucumbers and other small things. Unruly, wet, dirty, earthy heads of lettuce, carrots, broccoli and everything else just goes in the canvas bags.

I recently went into a supermarket to buy stamps and ended up buying some other things, too. I didn’t want to go back to my car for my canvas bags and I refused to take a paper bag. Balancing things under my chin, I could barely carry all my purchases. I must have looked pretty funny.

I work part-time out of a small office where people often leave water bottles lying around after only taking a few sips. I pour the water on the lawn and bring the bottles home to recycle.

Per my post below, I’m just delighted with the Original Spaghetti Scrub. It’s perfect for dishes, but I’m still using an icky sponge to wipe down the countertops. Who has a better idea?

The aforementioned visit to the supermarket was weird and frustrating for me. I had to forage for food there and it was challenging to find things I’d want to eat. Normally I buy produce at farmers markets and I buy proteins in the most unexpected place: the freezer case at Smart & Final. It’s my secret go-to store for clean, convenient fish. They have individually frozen, boneless, skinless, wild-caught fillets at a great price. The one ingredient was fish, nothing added. Today I discovered a second ingredient in the salmon: sodium tripolyphosphate. Dangit. I just looked up what the #$%&!! sodium tripolyphosphate is and I doubt I’ll buy any more of this salmon. Well, at least the white fish is still unadulterated.

Or How I Found a New Friend in the Spaghetti Scrub

Hi people. This is Andrea, a new member of the Goodbye detergent! team. After using the products for a few weeks now, all I can say is they’re ingeniously effective. I just love how they can squish and wiggle to clean any odd job.

Exhibit A

This dish is a key part of my lunchbox. It holds my beloved snack of apple slices and almond butter. Because it usually gets tipped sideways and otherwise jiggled, almond butter residue gets stuck in the grooves. Since a traditional sponge was a total failure, I’d end up scraping the bits out with a sharp knife then trying again with the sponge. The Spaghetti Scrub handles this job beautifully.

Another member of my household uses this colander for pasta and somehow thinks it doesn’t need to be cleaned afterwards. (Don’t ask). So when I use it for my veggies, I find an icky film on the bottom. It was especially hard to clean on and around the feet. The Spaghetti Scrub hugs those curves brilliantly and gets the job done.

Electrolyzed Alkaline Water

Alkaline water?

It sounds so scary, so chemical... yet it's slowly but surely becoming a conversation topic for eco-minded folks curious about the alternative ways to clean and be clean, without doing damage to the environment.

At this point, its popularity has been more fervent in countries such as Korea and Japan, but the curiosity has spread around the world.

In this LA Times article, Marla Dickerson writes:

"The stuff is a simple mixture of table salt and tap water whose ions have been scrambled with an electric current. Researchers have dubbed it electrolyzed water -- hardly as catchy as Mr. Clean...

Used as a sanitizer for decades in Russia and Japan, it's slowly winning acceptance in the United States. A New York poultry processor uses it to kill salmonella on chicken carcasses. Minnesota grocery clerks spray sticky conveyors in the checkout lanes. Michigan jailers mop with electrolyzed water to keep potentially lethal cleaners out of the hands of inmates."

If you're one to Google everything, you'll find many companies marketing their ionizers to make drinkable alkaline water for the home. Or you'll find information on large, industrial-sized machines that electrolyze alkaline water for mass usage. But you'll be hard pressed to find a solid, legitimate article or product that focuses directly on consumer-based, household usage electrolyzed alkaline water cleaning products.

What's great about electrolyzed alkaline water?

As far as we are able to research, it seems to be considered a miraculous method of de-greasing, disinfecting, and cleaning. AND IT'S JUST WATER! Articles such as FoodMagazine and Raw People list the benefits of alkaline water (an objective viewpoint!) for your body and overall balance and well-being.

We all know that there are risks in believing what you read on-line. If there's no stamp of certification, or published scientific proof reports, we are wary of drinking and being in contact with something as odd sounding as "electrolyzed alkaline water".

But we have a strong feeling that soon, very soon, we will be hearing more about this concept. And with hope, we say that perhaps every home might consider the benefits of switching to more environmentally-friendly methods of cleaning!

Spaghetti Scrub cleans Green Star

I have a Tribest Green Life juicer which I absolutely love. If you are in LA you can buy a Tribest juicer at the Roland Store www.rolandinc.com
Over time the plastic plunger gets a brown film from all the carrots that have been juiced. I used the Goodbye Detergent Original Spaghetti Scrub with the corn cob coating to clean off this discoloration. Took some elbow grease but you can see from the before and after pics, it worked. The plunger is lying on the scrub.
